Captain Planet and the Planeteers goes live action
With your powers combined, I am Captain Planet!
Captain Planet, he’s our hero,
Gonna take pollution down to zero,
He’s our powers magnified,
And he’s fighting on the planet’s side
Sorry, I couldn’t resist, worst/best theme tune. Ever. So looks like Sony have finally got desperate enough to get their own toyline/cartoon/superhero franchise that they’ve acquired the rights to the 90′s environmentally friendly series,; Captain Planet and the Planeteers. According to THR negotiations are ongoing but Sony’s plans would be to produce a movie based around the story of five international teens who ‘work’ for Mother Earth Gaia (as voiced by Whoopi Goldberg in the cartoon, gotta get her back!) using the powers of fire, earth, wind, water and heart to battle Eco villains looking to intentionally pollute the earth. When these powers aren’t enough on their they combine to summon the superhero Captain Planet or as I like to refer to him Captain Mullet.
It says something that I didn’t have to do any research for this article at all, clearly this show penetrated pretty deep into my childhood psyche but it’s not quite the same as something like Transformers or even He-Man. Those shows had something inherently cool about them, robots that transform into cars and a prince that transforms into a hero with a huge man-eating Battle Cat, Captain Planet was way too earnest in it’s efforts to be an environmental cartoon. If they’re going to do this, they need to drop the kids, make Captain Mullet a complete bad-ass and given him better villains to fight other than Captain Pollution FFS.
Thanks to Outpost 31 podcast for the head’s up on this bit of news…brightened up my day.
Oh and here’s an idea of what the film may look like:
