San Diego Comic Con: The Distinghuished Competition

After noting down all the Marvel stuff that happened at San Diego this weekend, I felt it was only fair to document DC’s presence at the convention…….so here’s what happened:

Bob Wayne and the Co-Publishers then began by speaking about the new “Talon” series, Lee saying that this was part of DC’s promise to publish a lot of new stories and characters. “He’s this assassin who decides to leave the fold and [the Court Of Owls] are not too happy about it,” Lee said.  The book will be written by Scott Snyder and James Tynion IV, Jim Lee told the audience, “If you love what’s been going on in the [‘Batman’] book you’ll love this.

The next book they introduced was “Team 7,” Lee said he was especially excited for the comic, saying it will explain the history and the emergence of Superman and the in-universe explosion of superheroes through the eyes of the secret government agency, headed by characters like Steve Trevor, Amanda Waller, Grifter, Black Canary, and others.

Talking about “Justice League International” Annual #1, Dan DiDio said he was having a lot of fun working with Geoff Johns on the book.  “With the conclusion of JLI we wanted to create a bridge…it actually ties into things happening in ‘Justice League’ #12,” DiDio said, adding that he volunteered to jump in to get the chance to write OMAC again. DiDio also said the Annual will wrap up Booster Gold’s story arc as well.

Lee then spoke about “Justice League,” saying that the next villain in the book is more sympathetic as he blames heroes for his own personal tragedies. “It’s a very illuminating story getting to know who the heroes are behind the mask,” Lee said.   Dan DiDio joked that “Superman and Green Lantern fell asleep in the pool,” when referring to  the variant cover of the #12 issue of the comic showing Aquaman rescuing the two, Lee adding that the issues will set up “Trinity War” as well.

“There’s an event that takes place in this book that will have repercussions throughout the New 52,” DiDio said.  Wayne then brought up the “Third Army” event heading into the Green Lantern books, but didn’t reveal too much about the story.

There was also mention of a story entitled Rottworld which will feature a crossover between Swamp Thing and Animal Man, the buzz that I saw online indicated that DC fans were very pleased with this news.

Scott Lobdell courted controversy when he announced that the upcoming Teen Titans #0 would feature a new origin for Tim Drake that would eliminate his time as Robin, having the character become Red Robin from the outset.  Which from my little understanding of the Batman franchise leaves me a bit confused as I thought that Damian Wayne wanted to kill all the former Robin’s, which after this of Tim’s origin leave just Jason Todd and Dick Grayson.

Red Hood and the Outlaws is set to gain a new team member when current leader Red Hood becomes entangled in the upcoming Joker storyline running through the bat books, as a result former JLI member Crimson Fox will join the team.

Well that’s it from San Diego this year, I’m sure there is more that was announced, but as I said in the first part of this article, we weren’t there.
