Iconic DC Character to Come Out as Gay!

Ok so you have probably seen the news by now that at Kapow 2012 this past weekend Dan Didio (DC Editor-In-Chief) told everyone they are about to reintroduce a previously existing DC character who was straight and will now be “one of our most prominent gay characters.”

Since the weekend and the story breaking we have also heard from the Senior VP of Publicity Courtney Simmons that : “One of the major iconic DC characters will reveal that he is gay in a storyline in June”.

So there we have is a gay MAN who is a major ICONIC character will come out in June………………………………………..but who?

I wasn’t originally going to post this as it is everything DC had hoped would happen, all the whispers of who? Who? WHO?

I decided I would write the piece and give my top five predictions as someone who grew up reading DC and thinks is it definitely of his choices.

So we know it’s a man and we know he is iconic which rules out some of the suggestions I have heard for people like Vibe, Blue Beetle (Ted Kord) and Captain Atom.

Now there is no proper rhyme or reason for any of my choices other than I think it will be one of them and that they would be an excellent choice for DC.

In fifth place I am going for Green Lantern, which one, well, take your pick. I think it could be Kyle Rayner, Guy Gardner or Alan Scott with the best choice being Alan.

In fourth place I am opting for Plastic Man, some may be surprised but Patrick O’Brian wouls be a fantastic choice.

In third place is old Robin himself Mr Tim Drake, now being Red Robin in the Teen Titans and for some reason I think the person will be from either Bat or Supe family.

My second favourite choice to be announced is the only villain of the bunch and goes by the name of Edward Nigma or you may know his as The Riddler.

Ok so here it is, my first choice and favourite DC character to be coming out the closet (if I am right) is the ginger headed pal of Clark Kent Mr Jimmy Olsen. I don’t really know why he is my choice but deep down I feel this will be the guy.

Also on a last note I cant help that DC have seen the publicity around the wedding in Astonishing X-Men between Northstar and Kyle (I am assuming its this two) and have though “Oh look, ill have some of that” and decided to jump on the bandwagon.

I am all for LGBT characters but the timing seems a bit bandwagon due to the wedding at Marvel.

Regards

Good choices, I was gonna put up my top five potentials but you’ve chosen a lot of he characters I would’ve chosen.

I can’t imagine that they’d go with a villain, otherwise I would’ve said the Joker, to make a villain the gay character may seem like a negative move rather than positive.

I’m guessing it would have to be a hero rather than a supporting character as a supporting character would have less impact, so that kinda wipes out ol’ Jimmy O, although that was an inspired choice.

It couldn’t really be Cyborg as he’s pretty new to the Justice League, and black, again they wouldn’t be so silly as to make the only black leaguer also gay. Aquaman seemed like a good choice but he’s married, is he not?

Given that Green Lantern (Hal Jordan) has been established with his own movie and definitely not gay, I can’t see them going for GL or at least not Hal anyway.

So by process of elimination, I think it has to be one of the Justice League to make any sort of impact, it has to be The Flash. I do kinda want it to be Supes though, I know that ain’t gonna happen but that’s what I want.

I thought of Flash as well and Wally West in particular as it would be quite off the wall and also had Savage Hawkman in my head along with a few others like Booster Gold before I went with Plastic Man. I think the vibe I am getting is it will be perhaps a re introduction so not someone in comics at present and I know over at the DC forums they are screaming for Plastic Man back.

I agree with Cyborg, Aquaman and im kind of regretting Riddler bit I think much like The Penguin mini series we could see a Riddler where he comes out.

When I was thinking Batman I had Alfred as a huge choice like just off the top 5 for a while before I opted for Tim.

As for the Lanterns well my initial thought was “Don’t the all like rings?” hahaha

Gay Superman would be amazing if only to see the response to it.

I actually think Tim could work, he would feel right as a gay character and he’s young enough to be uncertain of his sexuality. We’ve had every other kind of Robin, why not a gay Robin? Actually we never had a black Robin…have we?

I think it would work extremely well and the banter between him and Damien would be first class.

I hope they don’t go for the obvious Wonder Woman option.

Why are you speculating? It’s obviously The Gay Ghost the name says it all. Failing that Aqualad as he not only would be gay but also have the whole atlantean being gay thing. Agree with Gav it won’t be a villain as they don’t want their high profile homosexual character being a negative role model for people. It’s not going to be a JLA character more likely a teen character

  6. Boring! DC needs to come up with something else. They did this with Bunker and it made no difference. So ere we are again. Only this time it’s a “main” character. Regardless it makes no difference. Two gays got married in Archie comics already. It’s nothing new. Moving on.

But didn’t DC say it was a character who hasn’t appeared in the New 52 yet? That would also wipe out some of your choices.

But yeah, I’m deeply cynical about this. It smacks of “Oh, shit, New 52 didn’t work as well as we hoped, and now nobody cares again! What do we do?!?!?!?!?”
