Guess Who’s Back (AvX/X-Men)
You may be aware that I have got a slight obsession with the X-Men which has grown over the past several months culminating in my House of M(uldwych) podcast on all things X-Men along with grabbing every X title available on my pull list, though this slight obsession I promised I would leave most of the X-Men stuff for my podcast BUT……………………….. Professor Charles Francis Xavier is coming back and I am EXTATIC.
This weekend past we got a glimpse of some artwork for AvX 5 and 6 with this page jumping out at me.

First of all I have to say props to sidekick chief of staff and all round good egg @gavelesidekick because he called it months ago that Professor X would come back and I never believed him.
Second of all I want to tell you why I am so excited for his return.
In my X obsession I have not only been reading all of the available titles that come out each month but have been reading the back issues as well in order from the Essential X-Men Volume 1, Dark Phoenix Saga, Mutant Genesis and am currently away to start Age of Apocalypse Epic book 3. Not only have I been reading the comics and trades but have re-watched ALL the X-Men animation series as well as the movies X-Men and X-Men First Class (have them all but still need to rewatch X2, Last Stand and Wolverine solo).
Through all of this there is one thing that I have fallen in love and am totally captivated by more than others and it’s the relationship between Xavier and Magneto.
The relationship itself is quite beautiful and at the same time completely fraught with drama. There is a genuine respect and fondness for each other and its obvious for everyone that if they didn’t have such different views on what the future for mutant kind should be then they would have been besties for life.
Imagine growing up and thinking you were different because you had a mutant power and couldn’t tell anyone only to then meet someone just like you in so many ways, not only as they have a power like you but they have a huge interest in mutant rights before the world even knows there is mutants, someone who is an intellectual equal that you can discuss social and political issue’s with or just have game of chess.
I see there relationship as a kind of nature v nurture kind of thing as I imagine they are so similar but with such contrasting up bringing and pasts.
Erik (Magneto) Lehnsherr born in the 1920’s to a German Jewish family that had to survive the discrimination and hard times during the rise of the Nazi’s, his mother, father and sister all executed with him surviving and being sent to Auschwitz. Eventually after all this when he finally meet someone, falls in love and manages to find a piece of normality she sees his mutant powers and leaves him terrified, he relocates to Israel where he meets Xavier during the war.
Charles Francis (professor X) Xavier born in New York City to very wealthy parents, he graduates with honours at the age of 16 from Harvard University before doing his Ph.D.s in Genetics, Biophysics, and Psychology, he meets Moira Kinross and falls in love, agrees to marry but is drafted onto the war where he meets Erik.
Granted it wasn’t all easy for Charles with his step dad/brother but its hardly the same crap Erik went through.
Due to all the horrific and brutal experienced Erik went through during World War 2 he wants to protect mutant kind from the evil of humans (for what he perceives all humans are like deep down). Charles though wants mutants and humans to live as one, side by side with none more supreme than the other and preferably with no conflicts or battles between them.
I don’t know how magneto came to join the X-Men and I have no idea where Charles went to because I am not that far on yet in the trades but I love finding out all this stuff.
There relationship is a kind of bromance love story between two guys who clearly should be allies and best friends but due to drastically different views on the future of mutant kind.
I love this beautiful and magic best friendship that never was, seeing how it plays with both characters emotionally and cannot wait to have them both on the pages of X-Men comics together again.
I just hope marvel don’t screw it up.
Ps i just seen this cover of Wolverine and the X-Men 15 with Xavier and he is running WTF.
