Captain Marvel is Ms Marvel
I am so happy at this news as my daughter who is away to turn 11 soon already gets Batgirl, Supergirl and the new Avengers Assemble so i can add this to her pull list. She already plays the Avengers game on facebook with Ms Marvel in her team with the comment to me the other day “Does Ms Marvel have her own series as i want to get it dad?”.
In all honesty its about time Marvel got another solo female book again so well played Marvel, well played.
This July, Carol Danvers, once known as Ms. Marvel, will take on the legacy of a legendary hero in CAPTAIN MARVEL, a new ongoing series by writer Kelly Sue DeConnick and artist Dexter Soy.
“My pitch was called ‘Pilot’ and the take can pretty much be summed up with ‘Carol Danvers as Chuck Yeager,’” says DeConnick. “Carol’s the virtual definition of a Type A personality. She’s a competitor and a control freak. At the start of our series, we see Carol pre-Captain Marvel, pre-NASA even, back when she was a fiercely competitive pilot. We’ll see her meeting one of her aviation heroes and we’ll see her youthful bravado, her swagger. Then over the course of the first arc we’re going to watch her find her way back to that hungry place. She’ll have to figure out how to be both Captain Marvel and Chuck Yeager—to marry the responsibility of that legacy with the sheer joy being nearly invulnerable and flying really [expletive] fast. Sporting a revamped costume to compliment the codename, Danvers not only faces unfamiliar dangers and challenges, but also delves into her own history as well as that of the late Kree soldier Mar-Vell, the first person to operate as Captain Marvel.
“My playlist for this series is heavy on AC/DC, Heart and Pat Benatar.”
The series will reflect on what the legend of Captain Marvel means to the long-time heroine, what she will do with it and what the rest of the Marvel Universe thinks of her new role.
“Carol has an incredible respect for Mar-Vell, as a person and as an icon,” notes DeConnick. “She is hesitant to take the name because of that. The line is something like, ‘So much has been taken from him. I won’t take his name.’ It’s on Captain America to help her understand that Captain Marvel wasn’t his name, it was his mantle. And he would have wanted her to have it.
“As for the rest of the Marvel Universe, well, I expect the opinions probably vary person to person, but I imagine the overwhelming attitude would be one of, ‘What took her so long?’”
“I’m trying to strike the right balance defining her powers: what they are and what the limitations they come with,” she says. “[AVENGERS writer] Brian Michael Bendis did a great job focusing in on the fact that she is basically able to absorb and metabolize radiant energy. She weaponizes that in the form of photon blasts—expelling energy—and uses a similar process in order to fly.”The writer reports that Carol Danvers’ quest into the mysteries of her past takes a toll on her Avengers membership and that repercussions may be in store on that account. The new Captain Marvel’s power levels and particulars will also be addressed in the series.
In all, CAPTAIN MARVEL promises a new adversary that DeConnick calls “complex and unexpected,” new allies and “one friendly face from the distant past.” The writer also looks forward to her collaboration with artist Dexter Soy.
“I’ve never worked with a painter before,” she says. “It adds a weight, a significance—it makes everything feel epic. It’s awesome.”

Ok, where do I start…..firstly i’m sure this is a welcome revelation to those of us who were concerned that Mar-vell was returning from thr dead and negating one of the most important character deaths in the Marvel universe. Another concern is the books release date, July 2012, with Carol playing such a large part in AvX, are we right to assume the first six issues of this book are tie-in issues, or, are they jumping forward and spoiling the end of AvX?
Next up that outfit is awful, it makes Carol look bland, I know she needed an upgrade from swimsuit and street walker boots but this is terrible, and doesnt show her figure at all. Let’s not forget, Carol has curves, numerous people have commented on it over the years, and she embraces it. Alex wants a female driven bokk for his daughter to read, Marvel, give him one with a woman who is comfortable about not being skinny.
Last rant is that cover, that basically looks like the artist has given her asian eyes, and i’m not sure if they were intending to make her look as much like DC’s Powergirl but they’re not far off.
I give this series a year before ut is pulled, Carol’s last book was also cancelled.
I feel your pain in the concern at AvX tie in and where i will be picking this up for Freya and also reading it myself a lot of people will be put off if they start straight from AvX.
The outfit i agree is terrible, i really liked the black swim suit with flash and i much MUCH prefer her with long hair also i never noticed the eyes until you mentioned.
Suppose only time will tell but a lot of people are hating the new look a la Harley Quinn when Suicide Squad was re launched.
I’m just glad Mar-Vell ain’t coming back. Don’t mind the new costume, looks like a uniform, which I suppose it should if she’s now a ‘Captain’. Like the new haircut too, but then I like boy heads she does look too skinny, always saw Carol as a bit more of a real woman
